Chortkiv lies in the Ternopil region of western Ukraine, in the historic land of Podolia. The town follows the valley of the Seret River, which runs north to south through it. On a map, the river is the main line, and the older centre sits beside it. Newer streets climb the valley slopes on either side and fan out across the higher ground.
The town has several layered landmarks. The remains of Chortkiv Castle stand above the river. The wooden Church of the Ascension is part of the UNESCO-listed group of wooden tserkvas in the Carpathian region. Chortkiv was also the seat of a well-known Hasidic dynasty, which is part of its Jewish heritage.

On both sides of the river, streets climb and branch out across the higher ground. They create a layered pattern that follows the terrain.

The earliest streets are grouped near the river and the castle site. They form a denser, irregular core compared with the later neighbourhoods.
