Ciénaga lies on the Caribbean coast of Colombia, in Magdalena Department, at the north-eastern edge of the Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, a huge system of coastal lagoons. The town is laid out as a regular grid of blocks. The sea lies close on one side and the wetlands open to the west, so many of its streets end abruptly at water.
The town is remembered for the 1928 strike of banana workers that ended in a massacre near the railway station, an event later echoed in Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude. Its old centre keeps buildings from the republican era. Roads lead from here to Santa Marta and, across a narrow strip between lagoon and sea, toward Barranquilla.
