Clevelândia lies in the southwest of Paraná, on the high plateau that stretches across southern Brazil, near the border with Santa Catarina. The land is rolling rather than flat, with farmland, pasture and patches of forest. On a map the town appears as a regular grid of streets within a wide rural landscape.
The town's name has an unusual origin. It honors Grover Cleveland, the American president who settled a territorial dispute between Brazil and Argentina over the Palmas region in the 1890s. He ruled in Brazil's favor, and the town took his name in recognition, a small reminder of that international decision.
