Coimbra rises from the Mondego River to the university at the top of its hill, and the map shows that climb very clearly. The lower town, the Baixa, fills the flat ground near the river in close blocks. Above it, the upper town, the Alta, is a knot of steep, winding streets and stairways leading to the university buildings.
The Mondego is broad here, and it curves along the western side of the old town. Bridges cross to the south bank, where the monastery of Santa Clara and newer neighbourhoods sit on the far slopes. Green spaces, including the botanical garden and parks along the river, make large open areas next to the dense historic centre.
The University of Coimbra is one of the oldest in the world, and it settled permanently on this hill in the sixteenth century. Its baroque library, the Biblioteca Joanina, is widely known. The broad river runs along the old town's western side, and its bridges connect the historic centre to the south bank.
