Compton lies in the middle of southern Los Angeles County, and its old nickname, Hub City, comes from that central position. The map shows a flat, orderly grid of residential streets, typical of the Los Angeles basin. Major boulevards and the rail corridors carrying freight between the ports and downtown cut across it.
Compton Creek runs through the city in a concrete channel, and the 91 and 710 freeways mark its edges and cross points. There is also a small general aviation airport.
