Conceição de Macabu lies in the north of Rio de Janeiro state, in the interior between the mountains and the coastal plain. The town takes its name from the Macabu River, and on a map the river is the obvious guide: the streets are laid out along the valley floor, and the settlement stretches along the water rather than spreading in every direction.
The surrounding land is hilly and rural, with pasture and farmland crossed by roads that wind to follow the terrain. Side streets climb slightly away from the river and stop where the slopes get steeper. Further out, country roads link the town to the wider region, toward the coast and the larger cities of the north of the state.
