Contamana is the capital of Ucayali Province in the Loreto region of Peru, on the banks of the Ucayali River in the lowland Amazon. There is no road link to the rest of the country, so the river and a small airfield connect it to the outside world. On a map, the town appears as a tidy grid of blocks laid out behind the riverbank.
The Ucayali is one of the main headwaters of the Amazon, and here it is wide, slow and constantly shifting. Its meanders, sandbars and oxbow lakes create the most striking shapes on the sheet, and they change from season to season as the water rises and falls. The town itself keeps the regular pattern of streets and blocks found in many Peruvian settlements.
