Coronel João Sá lies in the far northeast of Bahia, close to the border with Sergipe, in the semi-arid country known as the sertão. From above, the town is a small, dense cluster of streets and squares with low houses built close together, surrounded by a much larger rural territory of scattered farms, dirt roads and dry scrub.
