Daxi sits in the southeastern part of Taoyuan, on a raised terrace above the Dahan River where the river leaves the mountains and enters the plain. From above, the old town is a compact grid of streets close to the river bluff, with newer neighbourhoods spread across the flatter land behind it. The river swings past in a wide curve, crossed by several bridges.
Daxi was once a river port for the camphor and tea trades. The prosperity of that trade can still be seen on Daxi Old Street, where the shopfronts carry ornate facades from the early twentieth century. The town is known across Taiwan for its dried tofu. The Cihu Mausoleum, the temporary resting place of Chiang Kai-shek, lies in the hills of the district to the south.

Old Street district
The historic commercial streets near the river form a tight cluster with narrow blocks and continuous frontages. On the map they are easy to spot as the most closely packed part of town.
River bridges
Several bridges cross the Dahan near the town and link it with the opposite bank. They appear as fine lines across the water that tie the town to the rest of the district.
