Ciudad Delgado forms part of the metropolitan area of San Salvador, lying directly north of the capital's centre. There is no clear gap between the two: the streets run continuously from one municipality into the next, and the map reads as a dense urban quilt broken mainly by the river valley and the steep ravines that cut through the terrain.
The municipality takes its name from José Matías Delgado, the priest and politician regarded as a leading figure in Central American independence.
