Dobryanka lies in Perm Krai, on the eastern shore of the Kama reservoir, upstream from Perm. The town extends along the water, with a mix of older low-rise streets and blocks of Soviet-era housing. Forest wraps around it inland. On a map, the broad reservoir takes up much of the frame.
It was founded in the eighteenth century around an ironworks built by the Stroganov family, on a small river that flows into the Kama. In the Soviet era a large thermal power station was built here, and it remains a defining feature of the town and its economy.
