Dodola lies in the West Arsi Zone of Oromia, in the highlands of southern Ethiopia. The town sits at considerable altitude on rolling ground, with farmland and patches of forest around it and higher mountains to the east. On a map it appears as a modest grid of streets organised around the main road, which carries most of the town's traffic and trade.
The area is known for highland agriculture, with fields of grain spreading across the slopes, and for forests and mountain trails in the surrounding district.
