Dongying sits at the mouth of the Yellow River, on land that the river itself built from sediment. The delta is extremely flat and still growing, and the map shows it clearly: wide, straight roads, broad blocks, water channels and reservoirs, then wetland, mudflat and finally the open Bohai Sea to the north and east.
The modern city grew rapidly after the discovery of oil. The Shengli Oilfield, one of China's largest, is based here, and its development shaped the city's layout of spacious districts separated by open land. The urban grid is generous in scale, with long avenues and large parks.
