Dráma lies in northern Greece, in a broad valley at the southern foot of Mount Falakro. It is the capital of its regional unit. Water shapes the town's centre more than anything else: springs rise in the Agia Varvara area and feed a chain of small streams, ponds and green spaces. On a map this shows as a soft, open patch in the middle of the dense street grid.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries Dráma grew rich on tobacco. Large warehouses and merchants' houses from that period still stand in the town. Today it is known for its international short film festival, which has been held for decades. The festival draws filmmakers and audiences each year to a town that is otherwise quiet.

Tobacco-era quarters
Older neighbourhoods with irregular lanes lie close to the centre. This part of town grew during the tobacco boom and still holds warehouses from that time.
Mountain to the north
North of the town the land rises towards Falakro. The streets thin out against the slopes, and the valley plain opens to the south.
