Duque de Caxias lies just north of the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the lowland known as the Baixada Fluminense. Its territory runs from the edge of Guanabara Bay in the south up toward the forested hills of the Serra do Mar in the north, so the map moves from wetlands and industry to denser neighbourhoods and then to green slopes.
The Rodovia Washington Luís cuts through the municipality as the main route out of Rio toward Petrópolis, and the Petrobras refinery known as REDUC occupies a large site near the bay. The city takes its name from Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, the Duke of Caxias, who was born in the area.
