Dushanbe lies in the Hisor valley in western Tajikistan, with ranges rising to the north. The Varzob River, also called the Dushanbinka, flows south through the city and gives it a clear north–south axis. Rudaki Avenue, the main street, runs parallel to the river, and much of the centre is laid out in wide, tree-lined blocks from the Soviet period.
The city's name comes from the Tajik word for Monday, after the weekly market held in the village that stood here. In the Soviet era it was renamed Stalinabad and expanded as the capital of the Tajik republic. The name Dushanbe returned in 1961. Today the Palace of Nations, large parks and new government buildings line the river.
