East Setauket is a hamlet in the town of Brookhaven on the North Shore of Long Island. From above it looks nothing like a grid. Roads curve through wooded land, residential streets loop and end in cul-de-sacs, and many properties sit among trees. To the north the land meets Setauket Harbor and Port Jefferson Harbor, and their shorelines give the map an irregular edge.
The Setauket area has a documented place in American history. During the Revolutionary War it was home to members of the Culper Spy Ring, which sent intelligence to George Washington. Today the hamlet borders Stony Brook University, and the large campus to the west adds a denser cluster of buildings and roads to the map.
