Eastleigh is a town in Hampshire, just north of Southampton. It grew in the late nineteenth century around the railway, when the London and South Western Railway moved its carriage and locomotive works here. The rows of terraced streets built for railway workers still define much of the central map, laid out in tight, parallel lines near the station and tracks.
The River Itchen runs along the eastern side of the town through a green valley of water meadows. Southampton Airport sits right on the southern edge, and its runway is a long, crisp stroke on the sheet. The M27 and M3 motorways pass nearby, so the town sits in a frame of transport lines.
