Échirolles sits directly south of Grenoble, on the flat floor of the valley where the Drac and Isère meet among the Alps. The land is almost perfectly level, so the street plan spreads out freely, and the mountains that surround it appear only as the edges of the map. The Drac marks the western side with a firm, straight line.
The town grew quickly in the second half of the twentieth century. Its neighbourhoods show several eras of planning, including the large modernist housing of the Villeneuve, which it shares with Grenoble. The Rocade Sud, the southern ring road, runs across the map in a broad curve and divides the town into northern and southern parts.
An Échirolles map poster shows a suburban layout that is more varied than it looks at street level: long avenues, curved housing estates, industrial blocks and parks, all on the level plain. Printed in black and white, those different patterns sit side by side and are easy to read.
