Écija lies in the province of Seville in Andalusia, on the Genil River in the flat Guadalquivir countryside between Seville and Córdoba. From above, the old town forms a dense, irregular web of narrow streets and squares, bordered by the river and surrounded by wide fields of cereals and olives.
Écija is known as the city of towers, for the many Baroque church towers that rise above its roofs, and as the frying pan of Andalusia, for its intense summer heat. Its history reaches back to Roman Astigi, and palaces and churches from later centuries fill the centre, arranged around the Plaza de España.
