Edgewater is a city in Volusia County on Florida's east coast, just south of New Smyrna Beach. It follows the western shore of the Indian River lagoon, and from above it is long and thin. The city stretches north to south along the water, with barrier islands and the Atlantic beyond.
The street pattern follows the familiar mid-century Florida suburb: parallel residential streets run inland from the shore, crossed by longer collector roads. US 1 runs along the city's length close to the lagoon, forming a spine. Along the water, the shoreline is broken by small canals and inlets that bring boats close to people's homes.
