Egra lies in Purba Medinipur district in the south-west of West Bengal, on low land not far from the Bay of Bengal and the border with Odisha. The map shows a compact centre where roads meet, then a wide spread of villages and fields joined by narrow lanes. Water is everywhere but at a small scale, in ponds and irrigation channels rather than in any single large river.
The town is a local hub for the surrounding farmland, with markets, schools and roads toward Contai and the seaside resort of Digha. Its character comes less from monuments than from its role as the place where the countryside around it comes to trade and study.

The main roads leave town toward Contai and Digha, drawing a few firm lines across a landscape of fine village paths.
