Einsiedeln lies in the canton of Schwyz, in a high, open valley of central Switzerland. On a map, the town is organised around the Benedictine abbey, whose vast baroque complex and forecourt form a large, geometric block at the head of the main street, with the village spreading out below it.
For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have come here to visit the Black Madonna in the abbey church, and the town remains a stop on the Way of St. James. To the east lies the Sihlsee, a long reservoir created in the 1930s that fills much of the valley floor with its branching outline.
