El Charco lies in the Pacific lowlands of Nariño, in southwestern Colombia, on the Tapaje River. There are no roads linking it to the interior, so the river and the sea are the main routes in and out. On a map the town is a small cluster of streets along the riverbank, surrounded almost entirely by water and forest.
