El Monte is a commune in Talagante Province, south-west of Santiago, in the farming valley where the Mapocho River nears its junction with the Maipo. On a map, the town centre is a compact grid of streets beside the river. Around it lies a wide patchwork of orchards, vineyards and fields divided by long straight boundaries and irrigation channels. Hills of the Coastal Range rise to the west.
The town's layout reflects its agricultural roots. A central square and a few main streets form the core, and country roads lead out past small plots and farm buildings toward neighbouring communes. The Mapocho's wide, stony bed runs past the edge of town, a very different river from the channelled one that crosses central Santiago.
