It developed as a planned residential area, and from above it shows a clear structure: large neighbourhood sectors separated by broad roads, each filled with streets of apartment blocks and houses. The pattern is regular without being a strict grid, and green spaces and open lots appear between the sectors.
The town grew quickly in the late twentieth century as Tunis expanded and families moved to new housing on its edges. Its neighbourhoods are commonly known by number, which gives the map a modular, planned quality. It is closely tied to the rest of the capital region, with main roads carrying commuters north toward the city centre.
