El Palmar is one of the pedanías, or outlying districts, of the municipality of Murcia. It lies southwest of the city centre. On a map it forms a thick, irregular block of streets pressed between the flat farmland of the Segura valley and the rising ground of the hills to the south.
The district is widely known as the home of the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital, one of the main hospitals in the Region of Murcia. The hospital campus shows up as a large, clearly defined footprint. Its access roads look quite different from the tighter residential streets around it.

Edge of the huerta
To the north the fine lines of irrigation channels and field plots of Murcia's traditional huerta start to appear. They soften the edge of the built-up area.
