El Zulia lies in Norte de Santander, in northeastern Colombia, a short distance west of Cúcuta. It takes its name from the Zulia River, which flows through the municipality on its way north toward Venezuela. On a map the river and its wide, flat banks shape the town's position.
The town centre is laid out as a small grid around a main square, following the plan of many Colombian towns founded under Spanish rule. Newer neighbourhoods extend along the roads toward Cúcuta, and the gap between El Zulia and the city's metropolitan area is growing smaller.
