Elorza lies in the state of Apure in western Venezuela, on the Arauca River, deep in the llanos, the vast tropical plains shared with Colombia. The land is almost completely flat. From above the town is a compact grid of blocks set against the broad, meandering river and the open grasslands around it.
The Arauca defines the map. It loops across the plain, leaving oxbows, sandbars and seasonal channels, and during the rainy season much of the surrounding land floods. The settlement sits close to the water, and its regular street pattern is the only strong geometry for a long way in any direction.
Elorza is famous throughout Venezuela for its annual festival in honour of Saint Joseph, a celebration of llanero music and joropo that has been immortalised in song. An Elorza map poster captures the town's setting: a small grid, a great river and endless plain.
