Eutin lies in the lake district of eastern Schleswig-Holstein known as Holstein Switzerland, between Kiel and Lübeck. On a map the town is framed by water. The Großer Eutiner See spreads to the south and east, the smaller Kleiner Eutiner See lies to the north, and the compact old centre fills the ground between them with a market square and short, irregular streets.
For centuries Eutin was the residence of the prince-bishops of Lübeck, and their castle still stands on the shore of the larger lake, surrounded by a landscaped garden. The composer Carl Maria von Weber was born here, which is why the town calls itself the Weberstadt. In summer an open-air opera festival is staged beside the lake.

Castle and garden
The former prince-bishops' castle stands on the lakeshore, and its garden paths form a finer, curving pattern at the water's edge next to the town centre.

The historic core around the market square is a compact tangle of short streets, in clear contrast with the open water and later neighbourhoods around it.
