Exmouth sits on the east side of the River Exe, where the estuary meets the English Channel. The map shows a town shaped by water on two sides. To the west is the broad estuary with its channels and mudflats. To the south is the open sea, lined by a long promenade and a sweep of sandy beach.
Across the mouth of the river lies Dawlish Warren, a narrow sandspit that nearly closes the estuary and makes a striking shape on any map of the area. Dawlish Warren spit
