Faches-Thumesnil lies directly south of Lille, within the Lille metropolitan area in Hauts-de-France. As the double name suggests, it brings together two former villages, Faches and Thumesnil, which grew until they met, and the map still shows more than one centre inside a continuous suburban fabric.
The streets form a close network of terraced houses and small blocks, the brick-built housing typical of the Lille area, broken by squares, schools and a few green spaces. Major roads and the motorway corridor toward the south run nearby, framing the town on the map.
