Fidenza lies in the province of Parma, on the Via Emilia, the Roman road that still organises the towns of the Po plain. From above, the historic centre is a compact knot of streets, with the long straight of the ancient route running past it and newer districts spreading across the flat farmland.
Until the twentieth century the town was called Borgo San Donnino. It was an important stop on the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome, and its cathedral is known for Romanesque sculpture associated with the workshop of Benedetto Antelami. Its façade is one of the region's most studied.
