Foothill Farms is an unincorporated community in Sacramento County, north of the city of Sacramento. Despite the name, the land here is almost flat; the Sierra Nevada foothills lie well to the east. What the map shows instead is a classic Californian suburb: looping streets, cul-de-sacs and long arterial roads that divide the neighbourhoods into large blocks.
The name points back to the area's agricultural past, before housing spread across it in the second half of the twentieth century.
