Forquilhinha lies in southern Santa Catarina, close to the city of Criciúma, on a flat river plain at the foot of the coastal hills. It was settled largely by families of German descent. Its centre is a compact, fairly regular pattern of streets, set apart from the farmland that begins almost as soon as the houses end.
The town is the birthplace of Zilda Arns, the paediatrician who founded the Pastoral da Criança. It is also the birthplace of her brother, Cardinal Paulo Evaristo Arns, archbishop of São Paulo during the military dictatorship and a noted defender of human rights. Their family roots here are a point of local pride.
