Fullerton was laid out along the railroad in the late nineteenth century, and the tracks still run through the middle of town beside the old Santa Fe depot. Downtown fills a few compact blocks around the station, with a straight main street running north from the tracks. From there, the grid spreads out across the flatland in regular, even blocks.
The northeast of the city is taken up by California State University, Fullerton, a large campus with car parks, playing fields and buildings on a much bigger scale than the houses around it. To the north, the grid breaks up into curving streets among the hills, where open space and golf courses add patches of empty ground.
Fullerton was the home of Leo Fender, whose company made the Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars here. A Fullerton map poster shows the town he knew: the rail line, the compact downtown, the campus and the gentle hills at the top of the frame.
