Gannavaram lies in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, a short distance northeast of Vijayawada. It is best known as the site of Vijayawada International Airport, and from above the long straight runway is the most striking feature, set against a town of mixed streets and neighbourhoods that has grown steadily as the region around Vijayawada has expanded.
The surrounding land belongs to the fertile plain of the Krishna delta, and the map shows a patchwork of fields crossed by irrigation canals and village roads. The national highway linking Vijayawada with Eluru and the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh runs close by. The town is also home to a well-known veterinary college.
