Gelsenkirchen lies in the heart of the Ruhr, and its map carries the traces of heavy industry. The Rhine-Herne Canal crosses the north of the city from east to west, with harbour basins along its banks. The Emscher river runs nearby. Rail lines, former mine sites and industrial plots break the street pattern into distinct districts rather than a single continuous centre.
The city was once one of Europe's largest coal-mining centres, and was sometimes called the city of a thousand fires. Many former colliery sites have since been turned into parks and business areas.
