George lies on a plateau between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean in the Western Cape. From above, the town is laid out in a regular grid of wide streets, with the mountains rising sharply to the north.
Founded in 1811 and named after King George III, George became the main town of the Garden Route. Its wide streets were designed with space in mind, and many are still lined with old oak trees.
