Getúlio Vargas lies on the high plateau in the north of Rio Grande do Sul, in a region settled largely by European immigrant farmers. The town is named after the Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas. On a map it shows the orderly planning typical of towns in this region, with a regular grid of blocks around a central square and streets extending evenly in every direction.
A railway line passes through the town, and its curve cuts across the grid at an angle, showing how settlement followed the tracks. The railway line crosses the town at an angle to the street grid. Its gentle curve is one of the few non-rectangular features within the urban area.
