Giresun lies on Turkey's eastern Black Sea coast, on a small peninsula. From above, a hill topped by the old castle sits at the tip, with the town wrapped around its slopes. A coastal highway runs along the shore, following the curves of the bays on either side. Behind the town, the land rises quickly into green hills cut by winding roads.
The town's ancient name, Kerasous, is linked to the cherry, and the tradition says the Roman general Lucullus brought cherries from here to Rome. Today the region is best known for hazelnuts, which cover the hills around it. Just offshore, Giresun Island is one of the few islands on the Turkish Black Sea coast.

The Black Sea coastal road runs along the shore on reclaimed land. It traces the edge of the town in one long, smooth line.
