From above, Grimbergen looks less like one town than a group of settlements. The historic centre gathers around its abbey, and the surrounding villages each keep their own small knot of streets. Between them are patches of field and woodland, a reminder that open country still starts just beyond the northern edge of Brussels.
The Norbertine abbey was founded in the twelfth century and gives the town most of its reputation. Its name reached a far wider audience through the abbey beer that carries the Grimbergen name and a phoenix emblem. On the map the abbey precinct appears as a dense block of buildings and gardens, with the market streets and residential lanes spreading out from it.

The canal edge
On the eastern side a straight waterway cuts across the landscape, drawing a clean line that contrasts with the curving roads of the surrounding villages.
