Guacarí lies in the Valle del Cauca, in the wide, flat valley between Colombia's Western and Central mountain ranges. On the map the town is a compact grid of Spanish colonial design, organised around a main square, with straight streets running in both directions until they reach the fields.
The land around it is almost entirely sugarcane, the main crop of the Cauca valley. On a map this appears as large, regular plots crossed by farm roads and irrigation channels. Guacarí is also known locally as a town of samán trees, the large shade trees that line many of its streets and squares.
