Guaratuba lies on the southern coast of Paraná, where the wide Baía de Guaratuba meets the Atlantic. The town occupies the southern side of the bay's mouth, and from above it looks like a neat grid of beach streets squeezed between calm inner water and a long line of ocean shore.
For decades the main link across the bay mouth to Caiobá and Matinhos has been a ferry crossing, an important part of the town's identity for residents and summer visitors alike. Behind the bay, the forested ridges of the Serra do Mar rise steeply, giving the coastline a dramatic setting.
