Guasave lies in northern Sinaloa, on the coastal plain between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Gulf of California. The Sinaloa River passes near the city, and the land around it is among the most intensively irrigated farmland in Mexico. From above, the most striking feature is not the city itself but the vast pattern of rectangular fields and canals surrounding it.
The city has a regular grid of streets centred on its plaza and church, with main roads leaving toward Los Mochis, Culiacán and the coast. Guasave is often called the agricultural heart of Mexico, and its economy is closely tied to crops such as maize, beans and vegetables grown in the fields just beyond the last houses.
