Gudong lies in western Yunnan, in the Tengchong area near the border with Myanmar. The region is mountainous and green, and it is known for its volcanic landscape and hot springs. Settlements here follow the valleys, where the flat land is available for building and farming, while ridges rise sharply on either side.
From above, Gudong is a town shaped by terrain. Its streets run along the valley floor and follow the course of a river and the main road through the area.
