Heemskerk lies in North Holland just north of Beverwijk, where the coastal dunes meet the flat reclaimed land of the polders. On a map the town sits along that boundary: to the west, the irregular shapes of dune paths and woodland; to the east, straight ditches and field lines that are typical of the Dutch lowlands. The residential districts fill the space between them.
Much of the town was built in the second half of the twentieth century, with neighbourhoods of low-rise housing, canals and planned green strips. Older points remain, including two historic castles, Assumburg and Marquette, set in their own grounds. The painter Maarten van Heemskerck, born here in 1498, took his name from the town.

Two castles
Assumburg and Marquette stand in their own grounds within the town, surrounded by moats and gardens that appear as small, formal shapes among the residential streets.

To the east, drained land is divided by straight ditches into long narrow plots, the classic Dutch pattern that frames the town on its inland side.
