Heilbronn sits on the Neckar in northern Baden-Württemberg, where the river is divided into several branches and canals. From above, the old town lies on the east bank, surrounded by a ring of wide roads, while harbour basins and industrial quays stretch along the water. Vineyards cover the slopes to the east, including the Wartberg, so the edges of the map shift from streets to rows of vines.
Much of the historic centre was destroyed in a bombing raid in December 1944, and the city was largely rebuilt afterwards. The Kilianskirche, with its Renaissance tower, remains the landmark of the old town. More recently, the Neckarbogen district was developed for the 2019 Federal Garden Show, and the Experimenta science centre stands on an island in the river.

The rebuilt old town is enclosed by wide ring roads, a compact core around the Kilianskirche set against the river on its western side.
