Herndon lies in Fairfax County, Virginia, in the western suburbs of Washington, D.C., just east of Washington Dulles International Airport. The town grew around a railway stop in the nineteenth century, and the old line has since become the Washington & Old Dominion Trail. The trail still runs diagonally through the historic town centre.
Around the small downtown, the map fills with the curving streets and cul-de-sacs typical of late twentieth-century suburban Virginia. Along its southern side runs the Dulles Toll Road, lined with office campuses of technology and government contractors. The airport and the Dulles corridor give Herndon an economic role larger than its size.

The highway runs along the town's southern side toward the airport. Its wide lanes and interchanges set a clear edge to the composition.
