Heyan lies in the mountainous northeast of Chongqing municipality, a region of steep ridges, deep valleys and terraced slopes. In this terrain, towns grow where the land allows. Heyan’s built-up area stretches along the valley floor and climbs a little way up the surrounding hills, so it forms an elongated shape rather than a compact block.
The map is shaped by relief. Streets run parallel to the valley, cross streets are short and steep, and roads leading out of town wind through the hills to neighbouring settlements.
